Introduction
Learning to read and analyze research literature can be a daunting process.
The goal is to become familiar with the steps of critical appraisal for different sources of information.
To get there, we emphasize a few simple tools, some practice, and the willingness to take one step at a time.
Hence, our journal club...
Objectives:
By the end of your residency, you should be able to:
Actively read and analyze AFP (and other) review articles to increase their background knowledge.
Critically appraise an original research article on therapy, diagnostic tests or etiology/prognosis
Critically appraise a systematic review and a guideline.
Perform a structured evaluation of other residents’ performance of the above objectives.
Actively consider the implementation of the appraised evidence into practice.

Journal Club Presenters:
PGY1s
You should have gotten the AFP review article from the schedule 2 weeks beforehand.
Read the article.
Prepare your presentation of the following items:
The title and purpose of the article
The Most Useful Part of the article (a graph, a table, a particular explanation)
Walk the audience through the SORT table and review the Strength of Recommendations grades.
Talk about one thing you will START doing as a result of reading this article.
Talk about one thing you will STOP doing or change as a result of reading this article.
Your presentation should take no more than 5 minutes.

Review the AFP review article.
Go to the reference section and select one original research study (not a systematic review, not a guideline, not a review article).
These are usually randomized controlled trials or diagnostic test studies.
Avoid "association" (harm or prognosis) studies
If you are unsure, find a couple of articles that look ok and contact Dr. Epling for assistance BEFORE you start working on one.
Use the applicable worksheet below to analyze the article
Use one of the critical appraisal tutorials on Dr. Epling’s site if you have questions.
Prepare your presentation based on the worksheet - but don't just read the worksheet - describe the research question, validity, results and applicability of this article to the audience - they won't have read the article
Your presentation should take no more than 10 minutes.

Review the AFP article
Go to the reference section and select either a systematic review, or a major society guideline.
Don't choose other non-systematic review articles, opinion pieces or commentaries.
Use the applicable worksheet below to analyze the article
Guidelines - Glasgow Worksheet
Prepare your presentation to cover the major points of appraisal of the systematic review or guideline and leave the audience with take home points.
Your presentation should take no more than 5-7 minutes.

Make the feedback to your colleagues polite and professional, but don't go easy on them - give them constructive feedback - what they did well and what they should improve.
